Developing Garden

Anna came across a photo of the pergola in the garden when it was new the other day and laughed about the fact that it look ‘plonked’ in the middle of the garden.

She did have a point I guess, but I did have a plan. As anyone who gardens will know, such things need patience and it takes a while to develop. You have to start somewhere, and this was the beginning of a plan to separate the garden into a number of different areas.

My plan has to a certain extent worked out. There have been a few side-steps and changes of plan here and there but things have certainly changed since the photo above taken in 2008. So, here are a few photos of the pergola as it has developed over the years.

As you can see, various plants have come and gone. The pergola itself has been replaced and the garden has grown considerably. New this year is a water feature that is framed by the pergola and in a month or so both sides will be covered entirely with Sweet Peas. There’s also a new wisteria that I’m trying to train to grow up and over the pergola. I don’t hold out too much hope for that but maybe in another 15 years’ time, there’ll be another blog post with the pergola dripping with the purply-blue flowers of a wisteria!
