Category: The Welsh Nuttalls

I’m bagging the Welsh Nuttalls – hopefully all 189 of them within time. There’s no rush though, and it’s a good excuse to get out into the hills and see some of the wild parts of Wales that I might not previously have seen.
You can check out my progress here: The Welsh Nuttalls, where I have a full list of those I’ve bagged and those yet to summit. And you can read my exploits in the individual posts about them.
With the settled weather due to break at the weekend, I decided to make the most of it and head into the hills to bag a few more Nuttalls. Most of the local ones are already ticked off now, so it meant a longer drive, but the Black Mountains and Bannau Brycheiniog still had plenty...
I very nearly went to Scotland at the weekend to backpack and wild camp along the Affric Kintail Way. But then I realised that it would be dark by 6 pm in Scotland, and sitting in a tent on my own in the dark from 6 pm onwards could be a bit of a drag....
After a busy week at work, it was time to make the most of my Friday off and head into the hills. The forecast was nothing special — just chilly, with possible showers. Most of the recent snow had melted, with only a few stubborn patches lingering above about 500 m here and there. I...
Things seem to have been a little hectic lately, and there doesn’t seem to be much chance of that changing in the near future. But last weekend was, at least, a quiet one. With a good weather forecast, it was also a good chance to get out into the hills and tick off a few...
As far as the Welsh Nuttalls go — those peaks over 2000 ft — I’ve summited most of them in the Glyderau several times. However, Y Foel Goch and Gallt yr Ogof at the eastern end of the range had yet to be bagged. Not surprising really, as they are smaller in stature than their...
After weeks of wall-to-wall sunshine and prolonged drought, Rhys and I had planned a day in the hills to tackle a couple of scrambles on the Idwal slabs. Typically, we somehow managed to pick the only day with rain forecast — not just the day, but the exact few hours! Still, it was in the...

I’ve orchestrated my working life around a four-day week — the idea being that day five is for freelance work, leaving the weekend free. It used to be a 3:2 balance between contracted and freelance work, but since Covid and my heart attack, I’ve been gradually scaling back the freelance side of things. This year...
With my sights set on summiting all of the Nuttalls in Wales, there were a few that I knew I’d definitely climbed in the past—but quite a long time ago. That meant that although I’d done them, I hadn’t used a GPS device at the time, so I had no ‘digital evidence’ to confirm it....
With another bank holiday weekend on offer and the weather looking good, it was time to head to the hills again to bag some more Nuttalls. I wasn’t working on Friday, so it was a long weekend for me and there was no rush to get started. I headed out for a little mountain bike...
