Conifer Bonsai

Project Pond wasn’t my only garden project at the weekend. I also had a somewhat more relaxing project in the form of a bonsai tree. Whilst at Charlies Garden Centre in Aberystwyth I rescued a poorly looking fern and a frost-damaged conifer. They were reduced in price and needed some TLC. The Fern was planted into a shady part of the garden where it has other ferns for company. The Conifer was to become a bonsai project.

So, in the early morning sunshine on Saturday, I sat in the garden and spent some time thinning it out, removing all of the dead and damaged foliage and shaping it into something resembling an old tree. It’ll take time to refine and the first hurdle will be keeping it alive, but it was a fun little project.

I should have taken before, during and after photos really, but forgot the ‘before’ and ‘during’ photos, so here’s how it looks now. I guess it’s a start anyway so there might be more to come as it develops over the coming months and years.

A quick DIY project

Oh, and for good luck I also got the tools out and added a quick DIY project to my list of garden chores for the weekend by taking apart an ancient gate from our old decking and re-fashioned it into a new stand for a beehive. Morgan came to help with this too.
