Picton Castle

As mentioned previously I try not to run on consecutive days as I tend to get injured if I do. That meant that Monday was a free day in Pembrokeshire for us and we needed something to do. I decided that Picton Castle and Gardens looked nice so we though we’d head there first. It’s difficult to find things that are suitable for us as lots of things are really aimed at children but with the gardens and the castle we thought we’d be able to spend som time there and more importantly there was a cafe with coffee and cake and a restaurant!

As it happens it was really good and we ended up spending all day there!

The first thing we found once we were in was a ‘jungle boardwalk’ Clearly aimed at children but that didn’t stop us! I expected it to just be a quick loop but it was actually a little longer than that taking us through thick stands of Gunnera. Next up was a maze that we wandered around for a bit and then the Jungle garden with it’s exotic plants.

We then couldn’t resist an elevensies snack of tea and cake.

Whilst eating this we thought that we may as well sign onto the 11:30am tour of the castle so that was next on the agenda. The tour lasted an hour but it didn’t feel that long as it was all very interesting and the interior of the castle was very nice. The custom-shaped doors in some of the rooms were pretty cool as was the history of the building itself.

More Garden and Woodlands

We then wandered around the formal walled gardens, the fernery and some other displays before heading off for a stroll through the various woodlands to ancient oak trees and ice houses.

It was a nice day and perfect for strolling through the grounds.

The grass garden to the east of the main lawn was pretty impressive and the sedum flowers were covered in honey bees. Presumably from the hives in one of the woodlands we’d walked through earlier.

Owls and a Zoo

Next we went to an owl flying display and wandered around the zoo that they have.

Maria’s

Lunch was then taken at Maria’s restaurant. Apparently Maria’s Tapas is well known throughout Pembrokeshire. She was there serving us and it was indeed worth the wait. It was a bit of a wait thanks to the fact that we mis-timed our lunch and ended up sharing the restaurant with a recently arrived coach party.

Lawnmowers and Paintings

There was a lawnmower museum that we had a look at and a couple of art galleries, as well as the obligatory gift shop.

Fairies and Woodland Walks

Finally we went for another stroll around yet another woodland where there were fairy doors, myrtle avenues and a nice pond.

The weather was looking a little ominous by now and it was coming up to closing time anyway so we decided it was time to head home. We hadn’t really expected to spend half as much time here as we did but it was a really good day out so highly recommended.

Once again it was back to the cotage for dinner there and preparations for our last day in pembrokeshire tomorrow which would involve me heading back onto the Coast Path for a final run.
