Hedgehog Nest

I came across a hedgehog nest while preparing the garden for the robot lawn mower. I was trimming back the pampas grass and clearing out the dead, dried growth in the middle. As I did it I thought to myself ‘this would be a perfect place for a hedgehog to over-winter’.

Sure enough, the next big handful of debris I picked up revealed a nice big fat hedgehog hiding under it. I replaced most of the dry leaves and such like and left the hedgehog to it. Hopefully I didn’t disturb it too much. The pile of leaves and other garden debris can stay there for now. I can clear it up later in the year once the hedgehog has moved on.

Hedgehogs are struggling in the UK and have been in decline for a while. So much so that they are now on the Red List as an endangered mammal. We used to see them all the time as children but they are definitely less common now. We do see them here now and then and it’s good to know that our garden has been helping one survive the winter.
