More Than Honey

We all went to the National Library last night to watch a private showing of the film ‘More Than Honey’ with the Aberystwyth Beekeepers Association.

Not only was it a pleasant evening with our fellow beekeepers, but the film itself was amazing. It’s a documentary providing an in-depth look at honeybee colonies in California, Switzerland, China and Australia. From highly intensive huge beekeeping enterprises in America, to cottage industries in the Alps it offers a look at modern beekeeping methods around the world, along with thought provoking commentary on the plight of the honey bee. Whether the threat be from intensive monocultures, pesticides and chemicals, diseases, mites or human intervention into the ecology of an area, it is all covered. The story is portrayed through the lives of some very charismatic beekeepers along with some truly amazing cinematography.

Quite how the beekeepers do some of the things they do on a daily basis I’ll never know, and how the film-makers managed to capture it on film is unbelievable. How for example do you attach a radio transmitter to a honey bee and then follow it in flight with a camera as it flies from location to location?

It’s definitely worth a watch if you are interested in bees, beekeeping, ecology and the environment, people or even just film-making. Everyone was captivated throughout, including Morgan who loved it.
