History Interviews

Morgan’s homework at the weekend was to interview an ‘old person’ about homes from the past, how their houses were different to those from today and how things have changed with respect to appliances, how they heated their houses and what they did for fun.

The ‘old people’ he chose were Granny (Anna’s Mum) and Grandad (my Dad) which worked out quite well as they had completely different houses as a child. My Dad lived in a council house in Bristol with loads of siblings, whereas Anna’s Mum lived in a log cabin in the middle of nowhere somewhere in the Canadian wilderness.

As coincidence would have it, I was also contacted last week by a history student at the university. As part of his oral history module for his degree he had to interview a local resident about their experiences of living in Ceredigion. He picked me, so I’ve spent the morning being interviewed. He arrived with a digitial recorder and had a few set questions to ask me but we just ended up chatting about windsurfing, surfing and triathlons and generally living in West Wales – Exactly what he needed I hope and not too stressful for me either.

The interview will be archived as part of the Ceredigion Oral History Project, so who knows, in 50 years time some historian might be listening to me to see how we lived in the past!
