Boxing Day Swim at Ynyslas

I decided to organise a Boxing Day swim with the INTR Triathlon Club this year. We didn’t have a huge number of takers and I think a few of those that did turn up were just trying to humour me, but they enjoyed themselves in the end and were glad they did it.

The air temperature was pretty warm at around 10°C, but the water temperature had been dropping rapidly lately and was now down around 9°C, maybe a little lower in the estuary due to the amount of rain we’ve been having and the runoff from the mountains. It was a fairly early start for a Boxing Day. High tide was before 9am and we didn’t want to leave it too long after that so as not to have to contend with the estuary currents. The seafront was likely to be a little too rough for swimming properly so everyone met here at 8:45am and and then headed to the estuary for 9am.

Braving the waters were me, Pete, Graham, Sharon, Alison and Elwyn and we had a few people for support and to take photos too. We put our wetsuits on had a team photo and got in. It was pretty painful on our feet, hands and faces for those who had no gloves or boots, but once in it was fine. I was quite keen to have a proper swim but no one else really seemed up for it so we just had a splash about for a bit.

It wasn’t long before the lure of mince pies and hot chocolate back at our house got the better of everyone though and they were heading out. Not to worry though it had been fun and I was now planning to jump out, get my wetsuit off and dive back in with just my speedos on. As I did so, another guy (who was visiting family in Bow Street for Xmas) turned up, stripped off and did the same. Needless to say it was a little bit of a shock to the system but wasn’t actually too bad. In fact after a few seconds it was quite a nice, invigorating experience. Not wanting to be outdone, Graham and Sharon had a go wetsuitless too.

We all then dried ourselves off and headed back to our house for ‘Epic Hot Chocolate’ and plenty of mince pies and chat.

It does seem as though everyone enjoyed it though as they are now planning to do it all over again on News Year Day – Are you going to join us?
