Garden Updates – Ready for Spring

Following my swim in Lake Bala at the weekend we took a drive through mid Wales to our favourite garden centre, Derwen Garden Centre just outside Welshpool. We had lunch there and then wandered around and as usual spent a little more money than expected!

The Maze had disappeared though which is a bit of a shame as Morgan was looking forward to that but there were plenty of plants that we liked the look of and plenty on offer as it’s the end of the summer. We bought a few new things and were even saved some money as we were paying. The ever helpful staff pointed out that one of the ornamental grasses wasn’t fully hardy so we decided against it at the last minute.

Now we have them all at home, I ‘ve just spent some time on the garden planting some of them out. It’s actually quite a nice thing to do as so many jobs in the garden at this time of year feel as though you are putting it to sleep ready for the Winter. Adding new things feels a little more positive as if you;re getting ready for Spring.

The new Cyclamens look lovely under the birch tree and hidden below them are some snowdrops which should brighten up even the dullest winter day.

We also bought a collection of Heuchera that should provide some interesting ground cover for the new border in the middle of the garden.

The sale stand at the garden centre provided us with a couple of nice little hebes that I haven’t quite decided where to put yet, a Potentitla which I’ve placed in a nice sunny and hopefully fairly sheltered spot, and a couple of plants that I must admit I’m not even sure what they are yet. The first is a small shrub with variegated leaves that looks a little like a Weigela, the second is a perennial with spires of deep pink flowers and lovely red-tinged leaves, which looks to me like a Persicara.

Persicaria?

We also bought a whole load of daffodil bulbs which we shall have to plant out soon. I think I’ll get Morgan to help with these and just put them anywhere in the garden to brighen things up come Spring.
