Stoat in the dunes

As I was rigging my windsurf kit up on the edge of the dunes here at Ynyslas yesterday, a big squall hit with 40 knot winds and heavy rain. I sat there huddled over my kit as a stoat ran out from the grass, sheltered under my sail for a few seconds and then scurried...

Garden Birds of Ynyslas

Although we live in a rural location surrounded by countryside, we don’t get a huge variety of birds to our feeders. It isn’t surprising really as the countryside around is is fairly sparse. There are few trees, and the ones that do grow are small and stunted and the number of different habitats that we...

What no Moths? Part 2

Last night was the first dry, windless night we’ve had for a while so I put the moth trap out to see what we could catch. We awoke this morning to the first frost of the winter and not a moth in sight. The first night since getting the moth trap that we’ve caught nothing....

What no Moths?

Don’t worry, I haven’t stopped moth trapping. I haven’t posted any lists of ‘this weeks moths’ as it has just been far too wet and windy to deploy the trap this week. Things should be fairly quiet on the moth front at this time of year, but I shall still be putting it out now...

My Newt

As well as moths in the moth trap on Sunday we also found a tiny (minute?) little newt next to it. Here he is on Morgan’s hands. As far as the moths go, we had a few in their, including a Dark Sword Grass which was a new one for us.

Sounds of the Night 1

Sounds of the Night

I’ve been doing quite a bit of moth-trapping lately. Usually it just involves placing a moth trap in the garden overnight and then investigating the contents in the morning. The identification, counting and photographing of the moths can take a while sometimes, but generally its a fairly laid back affair. Last night was a lovely...

Moth-Trapping in Portland

Seeing as I’m a little obsessed with moth trapping at the moment I thought I’d share this from BBC Autumnwatch. They were moth-trapping in Portland, a place I know really well as I spent 5 years of my life studying its geology for a PhD. (Which I never quite finished). I did get pretty intimate...
