Hive Inspections

It was another lovely day here on Wednesday. Perfectly sunny from the get go and very calm on my morning walk around the dunes at Ynyslas.

Unfortunately a day at work was in order so there was no lazing in the sunshine for us. The temperature here reached 17.7ºC according to my Borth & Ynyslas Weather Station and it was a little warmer than that inland. After work and school Morgan and I collected a new hive from Jim and then headed up to our our apiary in the hills behind Talybont to make the first inspection of the year.

Hive Inspections

There was a fair bit of cleaning up to do in the hives and there weren’t as many bees as I had hoped to find in the hives. I had a near miss with the queen in the first one as well (see video below) but found her afterwards on the crown board and managed to put her back into the brood box. Both hives were queen-right though, both still had live bees in them and both had eggs, larvae and sealed brood too so there should be more bees on the way soon.

Here’s a little video of the inspection of the first hive, complete with the near miss with the queen!
