A Real Puzzle

I bought Anna a 1000 piece ‘Where’s Wally’ jigsaw puzzle for Christmas. I think she enjoyed the relaxation of sitting there doing it over the Christmas break and before long it was nearly completed.

Then came the day of final success, it was nearly done, until she got down to one piece to go. The final piece of the jigsaw wouldn’t fit. That’s odd! A little bit of looking around and she noticed that although there were 1000 pieces, one of the pieces was a duplicate. She had two pieces the same and therefore one missing.

How does that happen?
