How easy is easy?

So, how easy is easy?

When a cardiologist says take it easy what do they mean? For me, taking it easy would be a nice easy 10 mile mountain mike ride at a steady pace. Somehow I don’t think they mean that. They’re probably used to talking with the majority of the population and take it easy would mean ‘take it easy’ when walking up the stairs.

I guess next time I get to speak to the consultant I shall have to be a little more specific. Afterall I wear a Heart Rate Monitor when I’m on my bike so I can tell them that a ‘normal’ ride would involve 2-3 hours with my heart rate averaging 150bpm and hitting 175-180 on occasion. I wonder if I’m allowed to do that yet?

I wish I was, but to be honest, since getting flu just over a month ago and then ending up on the cardiac ward again, I guess I should err on the side of caution. I’m still bunged up and coughing up phlegm, I still have some discomfort in my chest and back and I’d rather not cause more damage if at all possible.

On the other hand, it’s driving me nuts, its been a whole month and I just want to get back out on my bike and have a swim in the pool as I feel as though any fitness I had is just wasting away.

What I really need is a definite diagnosis so that someone can tell me what I can and can’t do at the moment.
