Morning for Morgan in the Durston X-Mid 1

Wild Camping with Morgan

Now that Morgan is home for a few months, we won’t be heading out to Canada to visit him. This means that we won’t be hiking along the Juan de Fuca Trail on Vancouver Island’s west coast either. A shame as I was looking forward to a few nights camping with the bears! It also...

An Impromptu Adventure in the Welsh Wilderness

Starting off on Dylife Mountain Road, I soaked up the views from Foel Fadian. Camping by Llyn Bugeilyn after a day of lakes and peaks, misty nights and frosty mornings added to the adventure. It was a wild weekend to remember in the heart of Wales!

Needs and Need Nots on the West Highland Way

Seeing as I wrote a packing list for the West Highland Way I thought it would make sense to review it now that I’m back. What were the ‘needs’ and what were the ‘need nots’? Was there anything I could have left at home to save some weight, and was there anything I wish I...

West Highland Way Day 4: Kingshouse to Fort William

It poured with rain all night. So much so that I had to keep looking out to make sure the river wasn’t rising. Fortunately, it was OK and at around 5:30am I heard the rain ease off. A quick check of the weather apps and it looked as though it would start again soon so...

West Highland Way Day 3: Tyndrum to Kingshouse

Setting off from a riverside camp with drying gear, the trekker navigates through Tyndrum, pondering over wild camps and supply stops, only to circle back. Despite rain and hail, spirits lift with brief sun glimpses and scenic mountain views along the military road. Concluding a challenging 20-mile journey at Kingshouse, comfort is found in a wild campsite, venison burgers, and dreams of reaching Fort William.

West Highland Way Day 2: Ptarmagin Lodge to Tyndrum

Embarking on day 2 of the West Highland Way, I broke camp early to avoid rain and made steady progress along the scenic path despite muddy conditions. Social encounters and magnificent waterfalls dotted my trek to Inversnaid. Despite tempting lodging options due to worsening weather, I chose to push on, ending the day in Tyndrum, setting up camp amid rainfall and securing halfway completion of my journey. With challenges like blisters managed, I readied for the next day’s adventure.

West Highland Way Day 1: Milngavie to Ptarmagin Lodge

After much anticipation the day had finally come for me to head to Scotland and embark on the West Highland Way. Typically the van had developed an issue a few days before but Matt at VW T5 Upgrades got it sorted for me in double quick time so I was hoping it would make the...

Not Planning the West Highland Way

Part of the fun of a little adventure or an activity such as backpacking along the West Highland Way is the planning. mapping out your route, deciding where to stay and how you’ll get there, searching for things to take in along the way and making arrangements and schedules. Sometimes it’s also nice to just...
