A range of moths

Not a great night for moth-trapping last night. Light winds and dry which is good, but the temperature dropped to 2ºC and we only got 5 moths.

I think all 5 of them were Lunar Underwings (Omphaloscelis lunosa), but as you can see from the photos below there’s quite a bit of variation in colour and intensity of the markings between them which doesn’t really help when it comes to identification.

Of course, if my identification is incorrect and I have something different then let me know. I’m still learning.

    Thanks Ben.
I did initially try lining them all up for a nice group photo, but one or two just wouldn’t stay in position so in the end I took separate photos and just stuck them together in Photoshop.

It has given me the idea of creating virtual moth display cases though. No killing of the moths and sticking pins through them for me, just a photograph (always to the same scale) and some Photoshop stitching.

It won’t be as easy as it sounds as I’ll need to set up a mini-studio so that I can control the lighting to make sure it is the same for each moth, but it could be a little project for me!

    Al.
