Getting back in the pool

I’ve recently started swimming again. Those of you who knew me a while back probably won’t believe that I ever stopped as I used to swim almost every day, and twice a day fairly often. I kept it up whilst at uni too, but building a house, working, getting married and becoming a Dad all got in the way and I stopped.

However, since I now have a part-time job at the university, the two days a week that I’m there provide an ideal opportunity to jump into the pool in my lunch-break. I’ve been a few times now and although it was a little frustrating to start with I don’t seem to have lost too much of my ability!

I was quite surprised actually. I know swimming is mainly technique, so I guess that should be easy to regain but I had expected to have lost quite a bit of stamina and fitness. Maybe I have, but after at least 6 years of not swimming (and probably close to 10 years of not swimming properly), I’m still able to get in the pool and do a decent work-out and a quick 2000 metres in my lunch hour… Don’t forget I’m also a few years older than I was!

As always, it is a little difficult to get motivated some days, often a nice meal and a coffee sounds much more inviting, but a litle bit of will power goes a long way. I always feel better for it after the swim, and I’ve also bumped into a few old friends that I hadn’t seen for while which is nice.

I haven’t lost any weight though as it just makes me eat even more!!
