Chasing the Wind in Wales
Well, that was a fun long weekend. After scrambling up Moel Siabod on Friday, the weather did indeed change. The sun disappeared on Saturday, but it was replaced by a significant amount of wind—so it was off to the beach for me with my windsurf kit.
Saturday saw me windsurfing in a decent south-westerly breeze using my bigger kit: a 5.7 m sail and my 104-litre Freestyle Wave board. All fairly chilled under grey skies.
On Sunday, the sunshine returned—along with a lot more wind—so I switched to smaller gear: my 87-litre wave board and a 5.0 m sail most of the time, though I did change down to my 4.5 m for a while. Plenty of sunshine, plenty of waves, and some nice blasting towards the Dyfi Bar and back.

Monday brought a return of the rain, and quite a bit of it, along with a very gusty wind. The conditions were all over the place—one minute I was underpowered on the 104-litre board and 5.7 m sail, the next I was overpowered on the 85-litre board and 5.0 m sail. In between, I was either unable to get going or unable to hold on, while cycling through every combination of the above kit!
I even had to pop home for help freeing a stuck mast at one point. It was just one of those days, and I think I spent more time walking up and down the beach than actually windsurfing. Still, a walk on the beach is always nice—and every now and then I managed a decent run with some big, floaty jumps.
That’s how Bank Holiday weekends should be!
Lucky you live so close to be able to pop home! Well not luck just wrll thought out decisions a good few years ago
