Tales from a down-shifted family
- Making the most of modest means
One of the compelling reasons for upgrading my computer was that my old one didn’t work with any of the offsite ‘cloud’ backup systems out there. Onsite Backups I’m a bit paranoid and go over the top with backups, but you can never be too careful. I have several onsite backups on external firewire drives...
I finally got around to setting up my new iMac on Wednesday. A new computer had been on the cards for a while as mine was 5-6 years old and I do use it everyday in a professional capacity as a freelance website designer. I’ve always been a Mac user, starting way back with a...
I’m feeling a little fitter at last so thought I would have a go at a proper interval session on the turbo trainer this morning. I had some sample workouts from Jon following my various fitness tests and lab rat sessions at the Sports and Exercise Science Department in the University so had something to...
You know you’ve spent too much money for one day when your credit card company phone you up to check that the purchases made with your card were actually made by you and that your card hasn’t been stolen. Its good that they do it and that they are on the ball. We’ve had it...

My windsurf equipment insurance was due for renewal last week. I’ve been with the same company for many years and renew it every year, and this year was no different. The e-mail I get from them asks me to renew online and as usual when i try to do so their system refuses to work...
My new lens arrived at the weekend, a couple of days after buying it which, considering the postal strikes was pretty good going. It’s a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens which I’m hoping will serve as a portrait and general photography lens as well as a macro. On my cropped sensor camera it...
As a freelance website designer, I run various sites of my own, most of which have some form of advertising on them to help cover the running costs. One or two of them do provide some income, all of which helps us with our ‘Simple Life of Luxury’ and making the most of modest means...
With all the rumours about Apple buying up touch screens and the ideas that they’ll be releasing a tablet style device somewhere in between an iPhone and an iBook sometime soon, wouldn’t it be cool if they had something completely different up their sleeves. How about using the touch screens not as part of a...
