Tales from a down-shifted family
- Making the most of modest means
We’ve spent the last couple of evenings watching Morgan’s Nativity play at school. This year it was titled ‘Barn in a Barn’ and showed us the nativity scene from the view of the animals; an owl, a cockerel, a cat, a donkey, cows, sheep, camels and numerous other small rodents! It was well done as...
Thanks to everyone for my birthday greetings, cards and presents yesterday. Although I did do a little experiment on Facebook where I hid my birthday from my profile until the evening… During that time I didn’t get a single birthday wish via Facebook, but within seconds of switching it back on they came flooding in!...
The days are pretty short at the moment here so I had to rush to fit everything in today. I was up early to sort out the laundry and do some chores and then do an hour or so of work on the computer whilst I waited for first light. Once there was some light...
It may be cold and wintry out there, but that doesn’t stop me windsurfing. Well, to be honest it did a little on Monday and then on Tuesday my back was aching so I didn’t get out either, but I made up for that yesterday with a nice session, well powered up in 30-40 knots...

However, after our Christmas weekend away and the fact that lights were popping up everywhere, I was beginning to feel in the Christmas spirit so couldn’t wait to get them up. Morgan...
This year for our Christmas family gathering we all headed off to the Forest of Dean. First we had a very nice and very large lunch in the Miners Arms and then went to Clearwell Caves to visit Santa. The caves are actually a combination of natural caves and extensive mine workings. The mining dates...
With Christmas fast approaching and the number of weekends left available for the family get together dwindling, we had a relatively early family weekend this year. Anna, Morgan and I drove to my parents house on Friday straight after work and school. We don’t go to the city very often so we took the opportunity...
Thanks to the strikes yesterday, I was forced to have a day off as the schools were closed and Morgan was at home with me. We therefore decided to head off in search of some geocaches and lunch in Machynlleth. First stop was a cache called ‘The Manx Connection’ I had a pretty good idea where it...
I’ve been using Carbonite as an online backup solution for a couple of years now and wrote a review of Carbonite back in 2009. All has been working well with it, to the extent that I had virtually forgotten about it. Whenever my computer is switched on and connected to the internet, it just automatically...
Christmas came early to out household yesterday. It’s a long story, but Anna cam home on Friday with a huge (8kg) fresh turkey. There was nothing to do, but to cook it. So yesterday we made a start with eating it, but even with help from Robbie the cat we barely made a dent in it....
