A Soggy Birthday

Thanks to everyone for my birthday greetings, cards and presents yesterday. Although I did do a little experiment on Facebook where I hid my birthday from my profile until the evening… During that time I didn’t get a single birthday wish via Facebook, but within seconds of switching it back on they came flooding in!

I had a good day though. Anna had bought me some new trail running shoes. Rather than wear them around the house for a bit to break them in as I should do, I decided to wear them for my morning run in Machynlleth.

It was miserable weather, pouring with rain, windy and dark but 5 of us went for a run anyway. In a way I’m glad I did wear my new shoes as the run was off-road most of the way, up, steep slippery, rocky steps, through deep slimey mud and across sodden moorland. My other shoes would have been a nightmare in those conditions as they have barely any traction, but my new Brooks Trailblades were fine. I’d picked this particular shoe without trying them on as they were the closest I could find to my current Brooks Ghost shoes that I wear. Despite this, wearing them out brand new wasn’t necessarily the best idea as I ended up with some blisters on the arch of my left foot. Hopefully they’ll bed in nicely over the next few runs though.

I also had some thermal running tights and some technical socks but haven’t tried those out yet, along with some smellies and an executive toy. Anna’s Mum bought me some Alliums back in October too as a birthday present so they are already in the garden, hopefully getting ready to grow next spring.

After my very wet run I had a quick 2.5km swim in the pool at Machynlleth and then used one of my free vouchers for a coffee in the cafe. I also managed to get a free bacon sandwich too, so not a bad start to my birthday. The rest of the day stayed dark, wet and miserable so we didn’t really do anything, just sat at home and chilled.

So, that’s another one down – How did I get to be 41 already!
