Open Water Swimming – Not such a good idea!
Regular readers of this blog will know that I’ve recently taken up Open Water Swimming. I’ve bought a wetsuit fit for the purpose, I’ve got my GPS working whilst I’m out swimming, I’ve been for swim in the sea, the estuary and a local lake and I’ve signed up to do a swim in Lake Bala in aid of Diabetes UK. (Please Sponsor me!)
All is going well, but I forgot one important thing – I’ve got Surfer’s Ear, a condition brought on by exposure to cold water. It also leads to ear infections which in themselves are often brought about by exposure to (not quite so clean) water. I have had some ear plugs custom made which should keep water out of my ears but I keep forgetting to wear them!
I’ve now got another ear infection and so I’m on a course of antibiotics and ear drops to clear it up. Don’t worry, I shall still do the swim in Lake Bala at the weekend, as long as I wear my ear plugs and my swimming cap I should be able to keep the water out of my ears.
