Summer Returns

After a week or so of decidedly autumnal weather summer has returned. Temperatures were back up into the low 20’s the sun was shining and there was no wind at all… Typical seeing as it was the Boardwsie Demo Day at Aberdyfi! No wind means no chance to try out some new kit and no playing with the latest and greatest windsurf equipment.

I decided to put in an appearance though so I paddled across in my surf ski as its the quickest way to get to Aberdyfi. Rather than an hour drive it takes less than ten minutes to paddle there. It would have been a lot quicker if the roof rack hadn;t lost a couple of circlips that meant some essential bolts had fallen out. I managed to repair it temporarily so that I could get my ski to the estuary and paddle across.

There wasn’t much happening, but that wasn’t a surprise. I did see a few friends that I haven’t seen for ages, so had a chat on the beach and took a look at some of the nice shiny windsurf boards. Wing-foiling is all the rage at the moment so there was more in the way of wings and foil boards than windsurf boards, but none of it was getting a look-in without any wind.

Up the Estuary

With not much happening and it only taking 10 minutes to paddle back I decided to paddle up the estaury for a few miles, stop for a snack at Abertafol and paddle back. That’s exactly what I did. It was a lovely, chilled paddle up to Abertafol where I sat on the beach as the sun shone down and the tide turned.

The Dyfi Estuary from Abertafol

I then paddled back. Strangely, there was now a bit of a headwind in the estuary but nothing too bad. Progress was therefore a little slower in this direction as the tide was barely moving either. There were quite a few people out on kayaks, SUPs and in boats now. Back at Aberdyfi and there was no wind again, I didn’t therefore stop at the beach but just paddled back across to Ynyslas where I packed up and headed home.

A quiet day really, but nice to get out paddling, and nice to see some faces I hadn’t seen for a while. Let’s hope they decide to come down next time there’s some wind.
