No Time Off and a Long Walk for Dinner

One of the main reasons I didn’t want to go flat out in the Dyfi Dash Sprint Triathlon race on Sunday was the fact that doing so usually takes quite a bit out of me. It sounds silly for a race that only lasts just over an hour but if I give it everything I tend to have to take some time off afterwards to recover and can take weeks to get back to normal. I didn’t really want a break in my training at this time of year, so the plan was to train right through the race, not go too hard and use it as a training session.

So, true to my plan, it was back to it straight away. On Sunday afternoon, a couple of hours after the race I went for a nice walk along the beach. No one else wanted to come with me, Anna was snoozing on the sofa, Morgan was engrossed in Minecraft, so I went on my own. The weather was now lovely, especially after the torrential rain of the race, no wind and not a cloud in the sky and with a really low tide the beach was looking amazing. I walked right to the far northern end of the beach, within almost touching distance of Aberdovey and back. The perfect way to get my legs moving after the exertion of the mornings race.

Then on Monday morning it was time to get on the Turbo Trainer for a fairly hard ride which after a 20 minute warm up was essentially a 1 hour Time Trial at my FTP. Here’s the TrainerRoad profile from the workout. Not bad going on tired legs.

I then decided to walk the 5 mile round trip into Borth to buy some ingredients for dinner, despite the fact that it was now raining. We needed some lamb mince so that I could make Lamb Koftas, and I needed to post a parcel as well, so I donned my water-proofs and headed off. The first shop I came to didn’t have pitta breads or any lamb mince, but that was OK as it doesn’t have a Post Office either so I continued on to the Nisa in the corner of Borth. Unfortunately they didn’t have an lamb mince either and the Post Office there is only open until 1pm, so I made the decision to walk all the way into Bow Street. It was now 4:00pm though so I had to pick up the pace to get there before 5pm when they could be closing. Off I headed and made it just in time before they closed. Unfortunately, despite being a well-respected, independent Welsh butcher they too didn’t have any lamb mince. You would have thought they could have made some for me, especially as I told him I’d just walked 6 miles to get there, but no, they wouldn’t. Oh well, I’d have to return home empty handed and still had a long 6 mile walk home as well.

I didn’t have any luck with the Post Office either as the one in Bow Street was closed too. Apparently it had closed down for good that very morning. I did have my phone with me however so gave Anna ring and asked if she could pop to the supermarket in Aberystwyth on her way home to get some mince instead.

I then started the long trek back, and eventually arrived home just as it was getting dark, after 11 miles and 3 hours of walking. Sometimes, even I think I’m a little crazy!

Not sure whether to say I agree with yo Al or just say no comment

  2. Race, indoor TT, then 11 mile walk in the rain. Now that’s a good block of training!

Thanks Trevor… And Dunderberg isn’t exactly a recovery ride either!
