55 Knots has fallen

The kitesurfers have now smashed the 55 knot barrieer over 500m – The speeds have yet to be officially ratified by the WSSRC, but Sebastien Cattelan has done it again at the 2010 Luderitz Speed Challenge. After writing history just over two years ago by being the first kiter to break the magical 50 knots barrier he was the first person ever to reach a speed over 55 knots average over 500m.

They do it in a very narrow channel in 45 knots of wind on dead flat water.

The overall winner on the day was Rob Douglas with a speed of 55.65 knots – That’s fast in anyones books.

Here’s a quick clip of Sebastien Cattelan following Anders Bringdal (windsurfer) down the speed channel.

Makes my attempts to hit 40 knots look kind of silly – especially as I’m just trying to get to 40 knots as a maximum, not an average over 500m!

Just watched this again – The wake from Ander Bringdal on the windsurf board looks as though it’s coming from a very fast speed boat – Impressive stuff!
