Tales from a down-shifted family
- Making the most of modest means
First up, it’s the Dyfi Enduro on Sunday. I’ve known about this for months, but that doesn’t mean that me or my bike is ready for it. However, I can’t get out of it now, I’ll just have to do the best I can and aim to enjoy it. It won’t be helped by the...
We did our customary pre-ride around the Dyfi Enduro course yesterday in what can only be described as perfect conditions. Warm, sunny and without any significant rain for a while the trails were in the main dry and dusty. Riders were thin on the ground, probably because it was Easter Sunday, but Dave, Dave, Simon,...
Just over a week to go now until the Dyfi Enduro 2011 so we were once again checking out some of the trails on our evening ride last night. This time we started at the northern end of the forest to ride some of the trails we rarely ride. Dave Reed couldn’t make it so...
Amazingly it’s only a couple of weeks until the dreaded Dyfi Enduro, an enduro style mountain bike race in the Dyfi Forest. I’m supposed to be doing it, along with many of the other local mountain bike riders, but after last night recce of some of the trails, I’ve decided that neither me or my...
I haven’t been out on my Mountain Bike much lately, but with only 3 weeks until the Dyfi Enduro I thought it was time to re-acquaint myself with it. John and I did a night ride in the Dyfi Forest last night. John had a brand new Trek Fuel EX8 to demo so after a...

Anna and Morgan were away on the Isle of Man for the weekend and I had to collect them from Liverpool on Sunday afternoon which provided me with a perfect excuse for a mountain bike ride at Llandegla. I drove up in the morning on lovely clear roads in the sunshine. The drive itself was...
February 27th dawned grey damp and windy, but the Ystwyth-MTB club had a ‘proper wilderness’ ride on the agenda. Things weren’t looking too promising as we drove to meet in Machynlleth. The Tarren ridge that we were supposed to be riding was shrouded in dark grey clouds and didn’t look too inviting. Dave, John, Pete,...
My big challenge this year is the Brontrager 24/12 in July, a 12 hour solo Mountain Bike Ride in Plymouth. I’m not aiming to be fast or do particularly well, but I would like to at least try to keep going for pretty much the whole 12 hours and at least do as many laps...
I’ve been having problems with my lights on the past few night rides. Despite the battery being fully charged, they only seem to last for about 2 hours at the most and then just shut off on me. The battery is 3 years old and does get quite a bit of use I suppose so...
