From Ynyslas to Urayasu – Morgan’s Japanese Adventure Begins
It’s been a big week or so in our household. We’ve dropped Morgan off in Manchester as he sets off on another adventure — this time to Japan. He’ll be spending four weeks in Tokyo before heading up to a ski resort on Hokkaido for the winter, working and exploring as he goes.
It doesn’t seem long since he returned from his nine months in Canada, full of stories (many of which I’m sure he didn’t share!) and a confidence that had grown in ways only travel can bring. Now he’s off again, packing everything he needs into a snowboard bag and heading halfway around the world.
We made a little occasion of it, as you do. A meal at the Black Lion in Derwenlas as a bit of a treat.
Then the drive up to Manchester, stopping at Cheshire Oaks for a bit of shopping and some lunch in Mowgli’s before the final goodbyes at the airport. It’s never easy as a parent at that point — seeing him disappear off into the big wide world, but also knowing that he’s doing exactly what he wants and setting off on adventures we could only dream of. At least last time he went to Canada with a friend; this time he’s all on his own. He seems to take it all in his stride, though.
As we drove home, the car felt quieter, but also full of pride. Seeing him set off into the world again — independent, curious, and kind — is everything you could hope for as a parent. Still, it doesn’t make the goodbye any easier. At least in the modern world it’s easy to keep in touch, and this time, rather than heading off with nothing really planned, he does have accommodation waiting for him and a job already secured. Last time in Canada he just ‘winged it’ and took some time to find a job.
His first stop on this trip was a couple of days in Abu Dhabi. He seems to have lucked out there, staying in a hotel with a rooftop pool for next to nothing.
After that, it was back onto another flight to Japan, where he landed today and has managed to get all of his stuff to a shared house in the Urayasu area — which looks nice enough from Google Earth! We’re not sure what he’s going to do for four weeks, but I’m sure he’ll find plenty to keep him occupied in Tokyo. A city like that has to have more to offer than sleepy little Ynyslas — even if it will be something of a shock to the system!
Good luck, Morgan. Have an amazing time. Go live it all, and come back with new stories to tell.
