Go-Karting Birthday Party

It was Morgan’s birthday party yesterday and we had planned to take him and a few of his friends Go-Karting.

I started my day with my usual Sunday morning Run and Swim in Machynlleth followed by a bacon sandwich and coffee in the leisure centre. It was quiet there thanks to the fact that many people were competing in the INTRtri St David’s Day Aquathlon in Aberystwyth. This meant that I was home a little earlier than usual so had plenty of time to prepare wet-weather  gear for the go-karting.

The party was at the Urdd Centre in Llangrannog, about an hours drive from here and we had to stop off in Aberystwyth to pick up some of Morgan’s friends too. I think 6 friends were invited, but only 4 were coming, but that still meant we couldn’t all fit in one car so Anna and I were driving down separately.

We arrived a little early on what was a cold, grey and very dreary day, but it wasn’t quite raining yet so we headed over to the karting track without getting all of our wet weather gear on. We didn’t really get much warning about what was going to happen or the plans for the karting session and before we knew it the first two boys were in the G-Karts and off around the track.

It then started pouring with rain. We were all now outside, with little shelter and without our waterproofs on so we gradually got wetter and wetter. We did have spare clothes for the boys  though and their waterproofs were soon donned. The boys seemed to be enjoying the karting though whilst Anna and I started get cold and wet watching them. They took it in turns to go around the the track in pairs and started off very tentatively. They seemed to think they were going fast though and did start to gain confidence as the session went on. Morgan and Cameron had quite a good race at one point. One of the boys said he didn’t want another go as it was too cold and wet, but he jumped back on the go-kart in the end and them all seemed to be having fun despite the miserable conditions. They certainly looked as though they had been up to a boys activity by the end of it.

Anna and I then headed off indoors to set up the cakes and get a hot drink. We had paid for the karting and for a party dinner which was already laid out for us, so when the boys finished we dried them off, cleaned their muddy faces, got them changed into warm clothes and sat down to eat – Although I don’t think many of them did much sitting as it was the usual party dinner mayhem! It was quite a good deal at the centre though as it only cost £8.50 per person which isn’t too bad for karting and a party dinner.

Candles were lit and blown out, ‘Happy Birthday’ was ‘sung’, or at least it was blurted out in some form or another by 9 year old boys! Cakes were consumed and presents were opened. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves before we headed home through the rain.
