Family Caching in Aberystwyth

Anna joined us for our geocaching expedition on Friday.

We started off with a fun litle cache in the woods just outside of Talybont called ‘Lambda’ and then stopped off for another quick cache and dash in Bow Street, before heading into Aberystwyth where we stopped to look for a puzzle cache called ‘Sigma – 1854 – Playfair‘. Anna had worked out the co-ordinates for this one earlier in the morning, but we weren’t able to find it.

We’re not really used to these urban caches and aren’t as keen on them as we are on the caches in the middle of nowhere. For a start in Aberystwyth we have been everywhere where the caches are anyway so they aren’t taking us anywhere new and secondly you feel like a fool if you get seen scrabbling around looking for them! We don’t like towns anyway and would much rather be out in the hills. However, we had a few things to do in Aberystwyth and there are a whole load of caches we haven’t done there, so we thought we’d give them a go.

Next stop was The Trap and a quick little cache not far from there and then a visit to the Castle. This was actually quite a nice cache with a number of clues that had to be found within the castle grounds in order to get the coordinates. It was then onto a Muggle infested cache right in the middle of Aberystwyth called ‘Urban Evil’. We didn’t manage to find it, but we were in the right place and later discovered that the cache owner had removed it for maintenance just before we’d got there. As we left, we saw someone else move into our place so all hope of taking another look had gone.

It was then down to the harbour for another sneaky little cache and whilst we were there the person who had moved into our place on the previous cache appeared and she was looking for it too having just failed to find ‘Urban Evil’ as well. It was quite sneaky little hide but we managed to find it in the end.

We then wandered into town to find the bonus cache from the Rheidol Valley Expedition caches that we had done the day before, and then found another cache on the way to the shops and dentist. We finished off the day by going to the end of the prom and kicking the bar, which is apparently an Aberystwyth tradition, and also a ‘Challenge’ on the geocaching website.

Another nice family day out in gorgeous autumnal sunshine.  think we should do some rural caches with Anna as well though, as the urban ones are a completely different kettle of fish and not really our thing.
