Moths in June

After a gorgeous day on the beach and then an evening Mountain Bike ride on Thursday there was an amazing mist hanging over Borth Bog on my way home, a spectacular sunset, and no wind. It looked like perfect weather for moths so I put the moth trap out.

I’ve been a little lax with the trapping lately and haven’t bothered with a white sheet around the trap so the number of moths in each catch has been fairly low. Thursday nights trapping was the same but there were some nice moths in the trap.

  • 1 x Purple Bar
  • 1 x Green Carpet
  • 9 x Heart and Dart
  • 1 x Shore Wainscot
  • 1 x Common Swift
  • 2 x Shears
  • 1 x Drinker
  • 1 x Broom Moth
  • 1 x Rustic Shoulder-knot
  • 1 x Cinnabar
  • 1 x Small Elephant Hawkmoth
  • 1 x Buff Ermine
  • 1 x Mottled Rustic
  • 1 x Dusky Brocade

The Cinnabar is always spectacular with its red spots on a jet black background, the Green and Purple Small Elephant Hawkmoth is always a treat as well. Even the fairly drab looking Mottled Rustic can be nice when fresh and the sunlight catches its almost iridescent, silky gold scales. The Shore Wainscot was lovely and a fairly rare sighting. We have had them here before but most people don’t get to see them. Even the common Shears looks nice up close and personal when in good condition.
