122 million miles on the clock

The Space Shuttle Endeavour touched down after it’s last mission this week with an amazing 122 million miles on its clock. And I thought my car was doing well with 122 thousand miles!

Pretty impressive stuff and a shame that it has to come to an end, but hopefully it will pave the way for newer, better, faster space vehicles and maybe missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. I know they have to spend ridiculous amounts of money on these things, money that could be spent elsewhere and money that could benefit me an you. But at the same time it’s good to see people pushing the boundaries and exploring the Solar System. It’s an amazing place out there and someone needs to know what it holds.

Wow, that’s impressive mileage, which I didn’t know.

And it is money spent on things that benefit you/me. What about that GPS tracker you use for windsurfing, for starters. 🙂

Here’s some more (a random site when I googled it): http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_benefits_of_space_exploration

I only knew the extent of this, as I was fortunate to visit NASA back in 2006. A large part of their role is educating the American public on what they do and how it benefits (otherwise they’d get backlash re Congress funding).
