Ystwyth CC Llety Gwyn Time Trial

I decided to give the local Ystwyth Cycling Clubs’s 10 mile ‘Llety Gwyn’ Time Trial a go last night. I wasn’t going to at first as it looked set to be wet and windy, but the clouds cleared, the roads dried up, the wind dropped off, my new bike was sat there staring at me and I’d run out of excuses.

I therefore put my cycling kit on, put my bike in the car and headed off into Aberystwyth. The traffic was terrible, I couldn’t get down Cefn Llan or Primrose hill so headed out to Capel Dewi and Lovesgrove and parked in the Industrial Estate then rode into Llanbadarn. There was then a long wait queueing to sign on and get my starting position as rider number 37.

I knew plenty of other people doing it so had a chat whilst waiting. Some people looked pretty serious mind you with their time trial bikes, aero helmets and disk wheels. I then rode around in circles so as not to get too cold. It was soon my turn to go, so off I set. I didn’t push too hard to start with but soon got down onto the aero bars and made my way out to the Lovesgrove Roundabout. It was then off to Capel Bangor where we turn right onto Cwm Rheidol, ride along the valley for a bit before making a U-turn in the road and heading back. I spoke to the marshalls at the turning point and thanked the others along the course as I went past.

Tim was behind me as we start at 1 minute intervals and he overtook me just after the turning point so I was already a minute down on him but I knew that he normally does times in the 24 minute range so I wasn’t doing too badly. I started making my way back and before I knew it I was heading back into Aberystwyth and it was all over. I’m not sure of my official time yet but it was somewhere around 26:30 which isn’t too bad for a first attempt. I’d been hoping to get under 28 minutes so was happy with that.

I’m sure I can go faster as well as it wasn’t that hard, I just need to do it a few times to get the pacing right and do some actual training on the bike as this was only my 4th ride on it and I haven’t exactly done many miles on the road over the last few years.

  1. Hi there, sorry I cannot remember if you were at the Lovesgrove trial last week? (I was there with my arm in a sling if you were..)I found this blog about the TT re-assuring, and hope to do the Llety Gwyn course next week. I am new to cycling (if you nip over to my blog you will be able to see..! All things are all new and exciting, if a little scary!
I am also most impressed with your Garmin report, is it a watch or bike computer?
Hopefully meet you at a time trial soon!

      Hi Charlie,
Good to hear from you and see that you’re keen to improve on the Ystwyth CC time trial. I wasn’t there last week as I was away camping on dartmoor but will hopefully be there soon.

As far as the compter goes, I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 with Heart Rate Monitorwhich is a watch style gps computer with heart rate monitor. I use the watch type because it means I can use it when running, windsurfing, walkng etc as well as on my bike.

      Al.
