Early Signs of Life

It was a fairly quiet weekend here. There just wasn’t much happening. We’ve all recovered from Covid which is good so Anna and I managed to get out for a nice stroll on the beach each day but other than that we didn’t do much. The garden is under control so there wasn’t much work to do either. It as therefore a weekend of relaxing for us.

I did spot some early signs of life in the garden. There were some interesting eggs on the hawthorn tree. I’m pretty sure they are Lackey Moth eggs so it won’t be long before the tree is covered in the web-like nests of the caterpillars. Maybe I should get the moth trap out a few times this year if I get the chance. I haven’t done so for a while so it might be nice to see what’s about.

My bonsai tree seeds that Morgan bought me for Christmas have germinated as well. I’m not sure what they are yet as the packet simply said ‘mixed bonsai seeds’ but the ones on the left look like some kind of pine and the others maybe maple or birch. Now comes the challenge of keeping them alive. Although I’m not sure if I’ll be around long enough for them to become impressive looking bonsai trees.

Unfortunately the ‘tĂȘte a tĂȘte’ daffodils that we planted into pots on the patio don’t seem to be up to much though.

They should have flowered by now, but out of the 100 bulbs we planted there isn’t a single flower bud. The catalogue said they were guaranteed to flower in the first season. We’ve contacted Thompson and Morgan and they say that there has been a problem with them this year so have refunded us. Judging by the quick response and pre-prepared email we had back from them they were obviously aware of this ‘problem’, but clearly weren’t going to say anything unless we contacted them about it. They didn’t refund the postage either, not to mention the money we’ve wasted on compost and pots for them. Oh well, at least they have some greenery I suppose!

Talking of refunds, there’s some rot on our garden shed. It had a 10 year anti-rot guarantee and has been well looked after and painted every year. I’ve therefore sent Garden Buildings Direct an email to see if they’ll honour their 10 year warranty. Somehow I doubt that I’ll get too far with that but you never know. If not I guess it’ll be a case of buying some tongue and groove and replacing the rear panel of the shed myself.
