Storm Eunice

After much hype, Storm Eunice hit today. Morgan was at home as all schools had been closed. In fact, most things had been closed including all council buildings and services such as bin collections. All trains in Wales had been cancelled and the University was closed too so I was working from home.

It wasn’t that windy when we first got up though. It looked as though it was going to be a lot of fuss about nothing. That said, the sea wall here at Ynyslas was looking very precarious and had a big hole in it from the last storm. It wouldn’t hold up to much.

Things did start picking around 10am though and soon the garden was taking a battering. The pergola fell over just a few seconds after I shot this little video clip. We haven’t been out to check on the beehives yet.

The sea wall didn’t last long and now has a much bigger hole in it.. I haven’t been down to investigate yet as I’m still on crutches but here’s a photo from another local resident. It looks like quite a mess.

The windspeed recorded on the Borth and Ynyslas Weather station hit 50.6 knots. Not huge winds in comparison to some storms but still very windy. The windiest we have ever recorded was 89.9 knots in March 2018. The weather station across the water at Aberyfi also recorded wind gusts just above 50 knots. The weather station on the lifeboat station managed a 74 knot gust somehow.

Thankfully the worst of it seemed to be further south.

The strongest gusts elsewhere in Wales were:

  • 80 knots at Mid Channel Rock Lighthouse Beacon off St Ann’s Head in Pembrokeshire
  • 75 knots off The Mumbles
  • 68 knots at Pembrey in Carmarthenshire.

Elsewhere in the UK it’s thought that the highest wind gust ever recorded in England was recorded on the Isle of Wight at 106 knots! I’m glad that didn’t hit us.
