A Birthday Bedroom Redecoration

Morgan’s main birthday present this year was a re-decoration of his bedroom. It’s not really surprising that he wanted something like that for his 12th birthday as I’m pretty sure it’s been the same (slightly pinkish) colour since he was born. He’s now a much more independent 12 year old so has his own ideas on how he’d like his bedroom.

Furniture

First up he wanted a triple bed. That’s a bunk bed with a double bed at the bottom and a single up top. With that decided upon we had a trip to Bristol so as to visit IKEA and choose a whole load of new bedroom furniture to go with the bed. New wardrobes (he’s never had a wardrobe before), new book shelves, drawers for storage, a desk, a chair and some storage shelves. This was along with some accessories such as a cool lampshade.

Colours

We had already picked a couple of colours for the bedroom walls. A couple of shades of a nice greyish blue from a range aptly called ‘Pebble Drift’. A suitable carpet was ordered to in a colour called granite. So the scene was set, time for me to get to work.

Preparation

The first job was to clear out his bedroom. There was so much stuff in there that this took quite a while – a few weekends to be precise. We tired to be ruthless and throw lots of things out, but it didn’t really work that well. The plan is for a second round of ruthless pruning as we pout things back in as well.

With the rest of the house now full of boxes containing Morgan’s belongings it was now time to dismantle the furniture. Kia (my niece) wanted the furniture for her new house and her young sons bedroom. We therefore tried our best to take a few photos of how it should look as we took it apart. We also made sure to keep all of the screws and such like for each item together with its various components. Even so, I think it’ll be quite a puzzle for them to get it all back together without the proper instructions!

This also meant that we had to store it somewhere, so the beachroom and conservatory are currently full to the brim with furniture and boxes not to mention a guinea pig. This does mean that I haven’t been able to do any training down there for a few weeks – although I can just about get on my turbo trainer still.

Meanwhile, the furniture from IKEA arrived. So, with nowhere else to put it, the hall was now also full. This time with boxes of new flat-pack from Sweden.

Morgan was still sleeping in his room, but he was camping there really with nothing more than a mattress, a duvet a bedside lamp and just a few of his usual ‘loads’ of pillows.

With the furniture dismantled and ready for collection by Kia we could get on with the painting. That didn’t take too long really but it did transform the room.

We’re now still waiting to get the furniture to Kia, although it looks as though I’m now taking it down to them. I couldn’t do so initially as I only had a small car, but now that I have the camper van I should be able to get it all in.

The carpets should be here next week and then we can start grappling with the flatpack furniture. We also need to order the bed that Morgan wants but we’ll wait until the rest of the bedroom is done before we do that as there simply isn’t anywhere to store it at the moment. It’s taken a while to get to this stage, but once the carpet is down and we’ve got rid of the old furniture it shouldn’t take too long to get it finished off. Morgan can’t wait. I too can’t wait to get the house back to normal. Although I’m sure that will take some doing and we’ll have to sort out other rooms as we do so. We also have a fair bit of paint left and the colours might go nicely in the bathroom. No doubt we’ll be re-doing the bathroom next and the mayhem will start again!

Sounds like our house at the moment too,as we are decorating the lounge which as you know has rather a lot of furniture, all of which is scattered around the rest of the house ready for the new oak flooring to go down……so it’ll be home from home for you this week end!x
