Christmas Day

I do love Christmas – It may be a little stressful in the run up, but the lights, the parties and the anticipation help to ease the stress. Morgan starts to get excited, Santa’s on his way and its time to enjoy some time as a family. I even sit down and watch some films on the TV.

This year was no exception. The house was full of food, presents had been bought and wrapped and we were ready to go. We had even treated ourselves to an evening out at the cinema watching The Hobbit the day before Christmas Eve.

Christmas Eve itself was a dark, dreary and very wet day here in West Wales. The flood water was rising in the garden and the rain was falling all day long. That didn’t stop Morgan and I donning our waterproofs and going out to do a geocache. It not only gave Anna a bit of time to sort out a few final bits and pieces but we had fun tromping through the mud and puddles and hopefully the fresh air and the walk would tire Morgan out a little.

Morgan was keen to go to bed early so that Santa could come and so that Christmas Day would be upon him sooner. He headed off to bead at around 8pm. He was just too excited to sleep though and by the time we were ready for bed at around 11pm he was still awake – Santa had yet to come, Anna and I wanted to go to bed but Morgan just couldn’t sleep. He was just trying too hard. He desperately wanted to sleep but just couldn’t. We tried everything. He snuggled into bed with us, although we didn’t want to fall asleep ourselves before he did! He listened to an audio book, and he led there quietly for hours but just couldn’t sleep. In the end it was all too much for him and he was started to get upset. He was worried that he would never get to sleep and that Santa wouldn’t be able come – we were getting a little worried about it ourselves too. There were almost some tears as he began to think that his inability to sleep might mean that Christmas wasn’t going to happen, but thankfully at around 2.30am he did finally manage to drift off. Relief all round, Morgan was asleep, Anna and I could now think about sleeping ourselves and Santa could finally leave presents under the tree.

The late night did mean that Morgan wasn’t up at 3.30am as he was last year, but he came into us at around 7:30 with his stocking full of presents that Santa had left. Phew, he had managed to come after all! There were presents under the tree as well so after a quick breakfast the unwrapping began.

Morgan had lots of lego, loads of toys, science packs, electronics packs, a remote controlled helicopter, sweets, chocolates, books and more. The Hex Bugs seemed to be a big hit too.

Anna had a wormery (although some of the trays were broken so I shall have to try to get them replaced – I guess I should have checked it when I bought it back in August). She also had lots of smellies, chocolates, kitchen gadgets and a sparkly Xmas Jumper amongst other things including the now customary After Eight Mints, Lindor Chocolates and Jamie Oliver cookbook. Anna’s Mum had also bought Anna and I a tumble drier which we’ve had for a while already. I had a very nice down jacket, lots of sweets and chocolates, money towards wheels and some books, the usual National Geographic subscription and other bits and pieces – one of which I’m not even sure what it is!

After the grand opening of the presents, we made a couple of family phone calls and then Anna started on the food preparation whilst Morgan and I started on the Lego building. I’ll be disappointed once Morgan grows out of Lego as I do enjoy helping him build the models on Christmas Day! The big Lego pack this year was a Gold Mine, complete with operational crane, conveyer belts, drilling rig, dumper truck and train. We’ve yet to build the Caravan and 4 Wheel Drive with Scramblers that he had, but will do so over the next few days.

It was then time to clear the table and prepare for lunch.

Lunch was a huge traditional Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings, expertly prepared by Anna and very delicious too. Morgan had plans to go for 7 courses but just couldn’t manage it and gave up after 3. Anna didn’t manage pudding either, but I did and then pretty much went on a ‘calorie consumption crusade‘ for the rest of the day!

After lunch it was time to chill with the TV on and play with our toys.

We had a go with Morgan’s Remote Control Helicopter, although I think we need some more practise with that. Morgan and I played Backgammon, we ate and drank and watched TV. We had a cold meat, cheese and biscuit buffet for dinner and then settled down to watch Lord of the Rings. There are presents and food everywhere and the fun continues. It’s Boxing Day as I write this and Anna and Morgan are still asleep – Mind you I did get up at 4am. There are still plenty of toys and presents to investigate further and the house is still full of food, so the festivities and family fun will continue for a few days yet. I shall have to cut back on the eating a little bit soon, but for now I shall just enjoy some time at home as a family. I do love Christmas!

Poor Morgan, what a relief that Santa was able to come! I haven’t grown out of enjoying Lego yet, perfect Christmas Day activity.
