A Blog-Worthy Weekend?

Although we were quite busy this weekend we didn’t really do much of note so there hasn’t been a blog post for you to read.

Saturday was a lovely day, cold but sunny and with no wind. I went out for a bike ride with INTR triathlon club in the morning. It’s time to start moving into strength training now after a long winter base phase so we were doing some 5 minute long fixed gear efforts along the straights of Borth and Ynyslas. I ended up doing about 35 miles in the end and seeing as I hadn’t been out on my bike since before Christmas it was a nice ride. It was a good turn out too with me, Pete, Graham, Sharon, Amanda, Karen, Mel, Alison and Paul. I hadn’t met Paul properly before but he seems to be on my wavelength, not only being into cycling and triathlon but also watersports, he has the same telescope as us and he keeps bees too!

Saturday afternoon was spent on a Scout Leader Training course. Nothing particularly exciting there really, all common sense stuff but it just allows the Scout Association to tick some boxes to say that we as leaders have carried out the necessary training. Once home, it was time for some stew and a quick go with the telescope. Only a quick look because as soon as I got it out it started clouding over, so we just had a quick look at the Moon which Morgan thought was cool.

Sunday wasn’t quite such a nice day, grey, cold, wet and miserable. I had planned on doing the Cerist Aquathlon but had decided against it as it wasn’t really worth getting cold and wet for a 25 minute race that I hadn’t even trained for. Part of me wanted to do it as I should do pretty well in it, but part of me also wanted to stick to my training plan to see if a proper periodised plan actually works. The fact that I’ve been doing ‘Base Level’ training for the past few months means that I’m not race ready – although I feel fit, I’m not very fast at the moment. The weather didn’t help either so in the end I went for a long 70 minute run, followed by a little swim with Anna and Morgan and then a 3km swim on my own.

As you can see, I ended up doing a lot more than I would have done if I’d done the race, but all at a lower intensity. It was enough to necessitate a snooze on the sofa in the afternoon though before we headed of the Dave and Sarah’s for dinner and a game of Rumikub and Cluedo!

Not the most exciting of weekends, but they don’t all have to be action packed!
