Another Dead Garmin

It looks as though my beloved Garmin Forerunner 305 that I bought just over a year ago has stopped working. Well, that isn’t entirely true as it is working, I just can’t switch it off, and can’t start / stop it or use any of the functions. It is however still alive and displaying something on the screen and even picking up my heart rate. But without any control over it it isn’t really a lot of use.

I’ve tried all of the factory reset options and have even reinstalled the firmware but without any success. It still won’t do anything when I press any of the buttons and won’t switch off either. Looks as though I may have to get that Garmin Forerunner 910XT that I’ve been lusting after for a while.

Not many places have them in stock yet but prices are already coming down. I can now get one for about £309 which is still a ridiculous amount of money and really I’d rather wait until the prices come down more, but now that my Forerunner 305 has stopped working it looks as though I may have no choice.

I could of course go with the 310XT which is the model in between the two. This has been reduced in price a fair bit since the 910XT was announced and does have the advantage over the 305 of being completely waterproof. It doesn’t however have all of the swim metrics that the 910XT has. The Forerunner 910XT will not only count the number of lengths you do in the pool, but can even work out which stroke you are doing and count the number of strokes per length. You never know, having one may well be just the incentive I need to improve my stroke efficiency in the water. Question is, is it really worth that much money?

OK, OK, I could survive without one for a while, but I do like to keep a record of my training and having a new gadget will just motivate me to train a little harder. I just have to work out where I can get £300 from!
