Garden Colours

The garden has been coming on well this year. It took a while to get going following the big freeze that was winter 2010-2011 but most things seemed to have pulled through in the end and some things are doing well. We could do with a bit more height here and there in the garden, but other than the sweet peas that are growing like mad all over the pergola it is difficult to get anything to grow particularly high here due to the winds.

The new garden fence has provided some shelter though and the goldenrod next to it is currently in full bloom. Elsewhere, the garden is a riot of colours from the pinks and purples of the Verbena, Lupins, Hydrangea and Campanula, the blues of the Borage and Agapanthus, bright oranges of the Marigolds and Lillies and the fresh yellow of the Rudbeckia, Alliums and the sunflowers.

Even the vegetables are providing some colour with the golden flowers on the courgettes and pumpkins and the bright red flowers on the beans.

Of course, we’re never quite happy with things in the garden and there is always work to be done. A Potentila that I rescued from another garden is now flourishing after a year or so of looking sorry for itself. Now that it’s doing OK it is in the wrong place. Some little Saxifrages that we have are being smothered by larger plants so could do with moving too. On top of that, the compost could do with turning and I really do need to work on the front garden, but even that is looking OK as the grasses, heathers and even the juniper are all looking good at the moment.

I should also take some cuttings and divide some plants to make sure we have plenty in the garden next year. I may have to use the new conservatory as a greenhouse over the winter, trying to propagate some of the plants. I’d best collect some seeds too.
