Santa Special on The Talyllyn Railway

Our annual trip to see Santa this year was aboard the Santa Special at the Talyllyn Railway. We had down this a couple of years ago and enjoyed it so thought we’d join a group of Morgan’s friends and do it again.

The recent snowy weather was going to make it a very scenic train journey, but unfortunately it was just a little too much for the trains. Not only was there ice on the track, but the railway company had been frantically trying to clear large stretches of the track at were up to 5 foot deep in snow. They didn’t manage to do it so offered us an alternative.

We could either have a full refund and not go at all, or we could go at a reduced rate, have a short trip on the train, see Santa in the Tywyn station and not have the usual, food and mulled wine.

We opted for the latter, which actually turned out to be better than the real thing in many ways – better value anyway.

The train journey was nice, the presents from Santa were good quality and we all stopped in the café afterwards where we had more choice of food than in the normal package. Admittedly we didn’t get a proper ride on the train, but nine of us are really ‘steam’ enthusiasts so that was never the main reason for being there so it didn’t really matter.

It was however a nice day out with lovely snowy views and a chance to see Santa before his busy night!
