More Moth Trapping

Lunar Underwing

Lunar Underwing

Morgan and I have put the moth trap out a couple of times this month. The first night it was pretty windy but we did get 6 moths in the trap.

We also put it out last night, but as there was quite a lot of rain forecast I brought it in at around 10.30pm and there was already a few moths in it. I’m glad I did though as its been pouring down since about 2am and would have been half full of water if I’d left it out.

Rather than give a run down of everything we’ve caught and the photos every day, I think I’ll write a blog post at the end of each month with a round up of the months moth trapping activities, along with a  list and photos of all the moths caught. Unless of course you can’t wait and need a daily update, in which case let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Don’t know what we caught last night yet, I have to wait for Morgan to wake up before I’m allowed to look at them, it’s like Christmas every day! It then takes a while for a newbie like me to identify them, along with some help from people at Back Garden Moths.

How do you get them to sit still for their photos!

They are surprisibngly co-operative. When I empty the trap in the mornings they just sit there as I empty them into little pots and then I’m able to tip them out on a piece of card later in the day and most of the time they just stay put while I take their photograph.

Having such co-operative subjects certainly makes photographing and identifying them much easier.

Looks as though we should be able to put the trap out tonight. It should at least stay dry with light winds, but it may be a little chilly for most moths.

    Hopefully we’ll catch some though.
