Autumn!

Autumn has definitely arrived in West Wales. It’s been blowing a hoolie for days now, which has meant plenty of windsurfing opportunities. Just for a change, I’ve been out in a few different places. Usually, I simply walk across the road and launch opposite our house, and I’ve done that of course, but earlier in the month I drove all the way to Aberdyfi for a sail. Then, on Friday, Steve was here and fancied some flat water, so we headed to the estuary for a somewhat gusty session.

Saturday was windy too but there was no one around here in Ynyslas, so rather than sail on my own I drove down the coast to Llanrhystud for a sail with Alistair and Jon.

It always takes a few minutes to get dialled into a new spot. The light feels different, the chop has its own rhythm, even the shore break has its quirks. But it’s good to do it now and then — it sharpens the skills and reminds me just how demanding Ynyslas really is. Aberdyfi, the estuary, and Llanrhystud all feel easy in comparison. At Ynyslas, it’s non-stop white water, tightly packed waves and not a patch of flat water to catch your breath. It’s a place that keeps you on your toes and never lets you relax for long. In a way, that’s what makes it special.

Today it’s properly blowing, 50 knots plus at times. Anything not tethered down is at risk of going missing and the sea looks like it’s boiling. Tempting though it is, with no one else around I think I’ll give it a miss. Autumn’s only just getting started, after all, and there will be plenty more chances before the season’s done.

Very windy here too, branches from oak tree down across the road, and our poor pear tree laden with fruits snapped branches and pears all over the place! Apples and plums covering the ground too .
Glad you were sensible and didn’t go in the sea x
