Tour of Britain

Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain was through Wales today. Local boy Gruff who I’ve known for years and have cycled with many time was racing for the Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling Team. It would have been rude of him not to try to get into the breakaway while on local roads, and that’s exactly what he did.

The breakaway was over 5 minutes ahead as they came through Borth. We wandered down in the heat and sunshine to watch them pass. There was a Sprint point halfway along the Borth Straight and Gruff sprinted to take the points. I doubt he saw us as he went past but we cheered him on and then waited for the peloton to pass as well. There were of course many big names of the cycling world in the peloton such as Julian Alaphillipe, Wout van Aert, Rohan Dennis, Mike Woods, Dan Martin, Mark Cavendish, Riche Porte, Michal Kwiatkowski, Andre Greipel and many more – not that it’s possible to pick them out as the whizz past of course, but it’s good to see them all cycling on ‘our’ roads.

It’s not everyday that you get to see a friend taking points in a major cycling race, and certainly not every day that a race comes through Borth and Ynyslas either.

We’ll watch the rest of the stage on TV as it weaves its way along familiar roads to the Great Orme in North Wales.

Go Gruff!!!
