Ready for the World Triathlon Championships

Well, here we go again, another big race. This time its the World Age-Group Triathlon Championships in London and am I ready?

Well, only time will tell but as per usual I feel far from ready!

  • Far from ready to leave the house as we haven’t even thought about packing yet
  • Far from ready for the onslaught of London – there will be people and all sorts there!
  • Far from ready for the madness of race preparation, and
  • Far from ready for the race itself – but everyone always feels like that

What I am ready for though is letting myself go after the race, having some downtime and indulging in chocolates, burgers and cakes!

There’s little else I can do now to prepare though other than rest and take it easy, stop eating quite so much and try to check out every aspect of the course and transition areas that I can once I get to London. My Bike is packed away and thanks to Anna and a box of Nail Art tricks my toes are race ready too.

I’m looking forward to the race though even though I don’t feel that psyched up for it yet. I’m not expecting to be right at the pointy end here as the competition will be very tough and there are a few people who are just far too fast for me, but it’ll be fun trying to get close to them and hopefully there will be slightly less pressure than at big races in the past. There wasn’t much pressure for the World Championships in Auckland last year but it was my first time at a World Championships so I didn’t know what to expect which did make it a little fraught. I did put a fair bit of pressure on myself in Turkey for the European Championships earlier this year though as I was hoping to win it but so far for London it doesn’t feel too bad.

I’m sure all of that will change once we are in the Big Smoke but at the moment I’m just looking forward to it and can’t wait to see how well I can go against some of the best in the world. I’m not expecting great things but it would be good to have a final flourish at the end of the season. Training has been going well, although there are a few little weaknesses that I need to work on and I’m already making plans to address those over the winter.

These races are pretty big events and therefore fairly important, but the idea for me is still to have fun doing them. I love the training and the races are just a way to test that it’s working. The heat of competition is always good and hopefully it brings out the best in me. We shall see, but in the meantime wish me luck for Friday, I’ll be doing my best for all my supporters and of course Team-GB.
