Carbon Fibre Pants – Even I Draw the Line Somewhere!

I decided with my new emphasis on swim training over the winter that it was time to treat myself to some new swim shorts. Actually, it’s an entirely altruistic purchase as the stitching on my older shorts is looking a little suspect and I wouldn’t want to subject other pool users to any kind of accidental indecent exposure.

So it was time for some Internet shopping. As I was perusing the options I came across the “Speedo Super Elite High Waisted Jammer” swim-short. A mere snip at around £175!

Now, I’m all for high tech kit, but £175 for a pair of swimming shorts is just crazy.

Apparently they deliver “a new level of hydrodynamic performance thanks to a network of bonded seams and panels: This ‘Body Stability Web’ provides support precisely where it’s needed to promote a hydrodynamic, neutral swimming position while returning the energy used on starts and turn”s. That may be so, and they may well have  ‘3D Zoned Compression‘, ‘Fit Point Markers‘, an ‘IQ Fit Waistband‘ and ‘Power Seams‘ but it’s still just a pair of swimming trunks made from a small amount of spandex and nylon! How can they justify charging £175 for them?

That’s OK though because next I came across a pair of “Arena Carbon Pro Mark 2 Powerskin Jammer” swim-shorts. Yep, you read that right, Carbon Fibre swimming shorts!! Surely if they have carbon fibre in them they must be better. However, even I draw the line somewhere, and at between £200 and £250 the line is way before here!

Apparently they are the first swimming shorts ‘integrating a carbon cage to deliver intelligent muscle compression, combined with unprecedented fit’.

Ha, carbon fibre swimming shorts I almost don’t believe it. At those prices I’d want more than intelligent muscle compression and unprecedented fit, I’d want mini turbo jetpacks in each leg.

Somehow I don’t think I’ll be getting either of these. Instead I’ll stick with a pair of standard swim shorts for less than £15.
