Moth Statistics in Wales

It’s been about a year now since I first started trapping and recording moths. It’s amazing just how many species frequent our garden. We don’t trap every night, usually only once or twice a week, but the stats so far are higher than you would expect.

  • Total number of Moths Recorded: 3,716
  • Total number of species Recorded: 192
  • Number of Moths in 2010: 3,516
  • Number of Species in 2010: 184

We only record the macro moths so far but if we included the micros then these figures would be much higher. Only 8 more species to go until we hit the 200 mark. Who would have thought that a simple box and a light would turn up 200 species of moth in one small back garden!

Last nights trapping session didn’t turn up anything spectacular or even any new garden records but there were still plenty of moths in the trap:

  • 24 x Lunar Underwing
  • 10 x Black Rustic
  • 3 x Common Marbled Carpet
  • 1 x Setaceous Hebrew Character
  • 1 x Shuttle-shaped Dart
  • 5 x Red-line Quaker
  • 1 x Large Yellow Underwing
  • 2 x Beaded Chestnut
  • 1 x Feathered Ranunculus
  • 1 x Square-spot Rustic
