A (very) brief visit to Stonehenge

Whilst driving between Southampton and South Gloucestershire on our recent few days away, we took the scenic route and realised that we weren’t far from Stonehenge. I hadn’t visited it for years and Anna and Morgan had never been there.

Last time I went there it was just a load of stone on a rolling hillside in Wiltshire. We parked nearby and walked across to it, sat on the stones and wondered how they managed to get them there.

Things are very different now. As we neared it all we could see were people and cars. We pulled up in the car park already reluctant to actually visit the stones. We didn’t have our National Trust cards with us so couldn’t get in for free and with the entry price of £6.90 and a huge queue of people we though better of it. Instead we crossed the road and took a look from outside the fence.

Not ideal, but with so many people there it was just horrible – Maybe another day – in the winter!

The picture doesn’t do justice to just how many people there were. It was one big queue of tourists walking very slowly around the stones. Would be nice to go back on a much quieter day, maybe when its raining!

I wasn’t trying to show the tourists there, just get a nice shot of the stones.

I went there on a school trip about 30 years ago and at that time you could actually go up and touch the stones.

I think now you can walk around them but at a bit of a distance. Fair enough I guess, as they should be preserved.

We drive past quite often but there are always so many people that we don’t bother stopping.
