Morgan’s Next Adventure: A Winter in Japan

I’m sure I must have mentioned it here at some point, but Morgan is currently in Japan. After spending the best part of a year in Canada — working in the kitchens at a ski resort in Banff and then heading out to Vancouver Island — he came home for a year, and has now headed off again.

While he was in Canada, he got into snowboarding and decided he wanted to go to Japan, which is renowned for having some of the best snow in the world. To get a work visa he had to have lived in the UK for 12 months, so after a year at home, working at M&S and saving up, he set off on his travels once more.

Tokyo

This time, rather than just rocking up without any plans, he paid a company to sort out a job and accommodation for him. They also help with logistics like transport to the resort, setting up bank accounts, insurance, travel cards, and so on. It also meant he had a month in Tokyo, living in a share-house, before heading to the ski resort.

He seems to have enjoyed Tokyo. His share-house was mostly full of Germans, but they all seemed to get along well and did various things together. We don’t get the full details, but he’s done plenty of sightseeing, has been immersing himself in the local culture (even going to a football match), and took some Japanese lessons too.

Hokkaido

After spending a month in the capital and getting the hang of how things work, he jumped on a plane and headed for Hokkaido. He landed in Sapporo and was then picked up and taken to his arranged accommodation at the Kiroro ski resort. All seems to be going well there. So far he’s been given his uniform, has a room to himself, and it sounds as though they cater for staff as well. I’m not sure when exactly he starts work properly — the resort doesn’t open for another week or so — but no doubt they’ll be putting him to work getting everything ready. He’ll be working in the kitchens again, but of course hopes to get out on the slopes whenever he can. There’s already a decent amount of snow.

It’s good to know he’s having a great time, and modern tech like FaceTime makes it fairly easy to keep in touch — although navigating the time difference isn’t quite so straightforward.
