Letting my Guard Down

I knew it would happen.. Less than three weeks to go until the European Triathlon Champs and I blew my healthy eating regime on Scout Camp. Shed loads of sweets, chocolate and cakes, far too much bread and loads of sausages! Thankfully it was only a couple of days and we’d taken plenty of fruit and veg along, but I still managed to go from 62kg to 67kg over the course of the camp.

Coupled with no sleep for a couple of nights and a rest day I’m feeling fat, unfit and not quite ready to take on the competition. Time to knuckle down, loose a few kilos and get into race shape again with just 14 days left until I head off to Turkey.

I was fairly pleased with myself yesterday after returning from camp, tired and in need of some rest and relaxation I still managed to head out for a sea swim followed by a run. I did have to do it as soon as I got in though because I don’t think I would have bothered if I had sat down first. The run was quite eventful though. First I wasn’t really concentrating and I was quite tired so managed to fall over on the beach, winding myself for a few seconds and hurting my ribs. Then later on in the run some guy in a car pulled out of a junction onto me forcing me to have to jump onto his bonnet and roll across in Starsky and Hutch style in order to avoid being flattened. I managed to hurt my wrist in the process but I don’t think anything is too badly damaged by either incident.

I then had a less than super-healthy dinner though, pizza and salad followed by Lemon, Lime and Poppy Seed cake, coffee and Jaffa Cakes, along with some Haribo’s and biscuits – Come on Al, get a grip!

Today’s session is supposed to be a hard bike followed by a run but the weather is looking pretty miserable out there at the moment so I’m not looking forward to it. I’m going to have to force myself out at some point though for fear of turning into a blob rather than a fast racing machine.
