Cold Weather Running
I’m quite enjoying my running at the moment. My ankles and knees might not be, but my head is. With the right gear, you just can’t beat a nice early morning run in the Welsh hills, watching the sunrise catching the snow on top of thills. It really does make you appreciate what a perfect part of the world we live in.
You don’t need much in the way of gear either. Running shoes of course and then on the colder days I wear a pair of Nike Dri Fit thermal tights, a thin thermal base layer, a jacket, a buff and a fleecy hat.
I’m not usually known for wearing tights but they are nice, they keep my legs warm and are actually pretty comfortable as well. The lightweight thermal base layer is pretty cosy and wicks away any sweat. The soft-shell jacket is only a cheap one from Mountain Warehouse. It is supposed to be waterproof and windproof but isn’t really either to any significant extent. It does the job though, it’s fairly tight so doesn’t flap about in the wind and it’s lack of windproofing means that I don’t overheat too much in it.
I then wear the buff around my neck just to help keep the cold off my chest and a fleecy hat on my head to keep my head and ears warm. I may need a pair of gloves just to finish off the outfit, but even without, it feels just about right. The feeling of running along on a crisp winters morning, or even through the pouring rain, whilst staying relatively comfortable is brilliant. I only wish my joints would allow me to run further and more often.
