Pwllheli Triathlon 2012 Preparations

Well, I was hoping not to have any excuses for my first race of the season – the Pwllheli Triathlon on Sunday – but as usual, I do!

first up, I’m not really treating this as a particularly important race and will therefore simply be training right through it. No tapering beforehand and no real preparation for it, I’ll probably have an easy day tomorrow and maybe a recovery day on Monday if I need it, but otherwise it’s just business as usual.

Saying that, training has been going quite well lately. I haven’t done any speed work yet this year so don’t feel very fast but my overall fitness should be fairly good. I’m not sure if I’ve improved at all since last year though. Last year Pwllheli was my first proper triathlon since starting to get fit again. I hadn’t really done much training for it and didn’t know what to expect, but I did OK finishing in a time of 1:08:36 which prompted me to start training properly.

Here we are now, a year later and I’m about to do it again. I should be faster, but I don’t really feel as though I am – I guess we’ll find out on Sunday.

My second excuse though is a good one – I’ve got a blister on my right foot that seems to have become infected. To tell the truth, it’s about 4 blisters one on top of the other and I don’t know if it’s infected or not, but I can barely walk on it at the moment, let alone run. Anna poked and prodded it for me last night and tried to drain some fluid from it, but her efforts only made it 10 times worse.

Hopefully two days of not running on it (today and tomorrow) will allow the pain to subside enough that I can at least complete the run on Sunday. The way it feels at the moment though I won’t be doing it at a ‘blistering’ pace.

Not to worry, as I said, it’s not an important race but it should be fun to be there and compete, especially seeing as there will be quite a few people I know competing as well. Let’s hope the weather holds.
